Patulous internal auditory canal.

چکیده
OBJECTIVE To investigate a rare anomaly of the internal auditory canal known as a patulous canal and its relationship to hearing impairment. METHODS High-resolution computed tomographic scans of the temporal bones of patients who presented between August 2001 and August 2002 were reviewed. The patients' medical charts were evaluated for age, sex, and hearing impairment, and the computed tomographic scans were examined for the presence of a patulous canal. RESULTS The study group included 645 patients who underwent high-resolution computed tomography of the temporal bones for various reasons, including sensorineural hearing loss (50% of patients). A patulous canal without any associated anomaly of the labyrinth was the only finding in 2 patients. Both patients had chronic middle ear disease along with conductive hearing loss. CONCLUSION Patulous canal is a rare anatomical variant of the internal auditory canal (0.3%), and its association with inflammatory ear disease accompanied by conductive hearing impairment appears to have been incidental in both cases in the present study.

Hennebert's sign in superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome: a video case report.
Superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) syndrome has been called the great otologic mimicker because its presentation overlaps with otosclerosis, Meniere's disease, perilymphatic fistula, and patulous eustachian tube. A valuable examination finding that can help distinguish SSCD syndrome from other pathologic conditions is the presence of Hennebert's sign, in which pressure changes in the...
متن کاملRespiratory Epithelial Adenomatoid Hamartoma: A Very Rare Entity Originating from the External Auditory Canal
Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma (REAH) is an uncommon lesion of the upper aerodigestive tract. It is characterized by abnormal glandular formations with ciliated epithelium arising from the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx, but other locations have also been described. We did not find any other cases of this hamartomas in the external auditory canal in the literature...
متن کاملDuplication anomaly of the internal auditory canal.
A 45-year-old man presented with slowly progressive left-sided hearing loss of 5 years duration. Examination revealed bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, more severe on the left, with poor speech discrimination on the left. Brainstem-evoked-response audiometry demonstrated borderline prolongation of interpeak latencies and poor early wave identification on the left side. A retrocochlear lesio...

We noted enlargement of the internal auditory canal in several of our patients with posterior fossa malformations, hemangiomas, arterial anomalies, cardiac defects, eye abnormalities, and sternal or supraumbilical defects (PHACES) association and hence evaluated children with PHACES for the presence of an enlarged internal auditory canal and potential associated findings, including infantile he...
متن کاملCochlear Dysfunction is not Common in Human Meningioma of the Internal Auditory Canal.
HYPOTHESIS Cochlear dysfunction is not common in human meningioma of the internal auditory canal. BACKGROUND Meningiomas arising from the cerebellopontine angle and internal auditory canal typically cause hearing loss. Cochlear dysfunction is known to contribute to sensorineural hearing loss induced by vestibular schwannoma, the most common tumor of the internal auditory canal. Detailed cochl...
